Bats

Pest Image

Bats

There are more than 980 species of bats worldwide with about 40 species found in the United States. The two most common species that enter structures are the little brown bat and the big brown bat.

For centuriesPhoto of a small bat with its fangs showing, bats have been the subject of folklore and myths, often associated with witchcraft, haunted houses and evil. These myths still exist today and cause unfounded fear in many people.

Bats are nocturnal flying mammals that leave their roosts at dusk to feed and return to secluded dark places just before daylight. Most species are active during the warmer months and hibernate and/or migrate for the winter season. However, they do not fly in rainy or unseasonably cold weather.

Habits

Big brown bats:

Female big brown bats form nursery colonies in the spring and are joined by males in late summer.  They leave their roost at dusk in a slow, fluttering flight to find food. They feed close to the ground on various insects including beetles, ants, wasps, flies and mosquitoes.bat

Little brown bats:

The little brown bat is the most common specie we have in this part of the country. This specie forms nursery colonies in early spring, then migrates south in autumn and hibernates in irregular clusters from September through April. They feed on insects, primarily flies and moths, and alternate their feeding with rest periods during which time they hang to digest their food.

Habitat

Different bat species living across the United Stated roost in dark secluded areas of buildings and in naturally protected areas like caves.

Big brown bats:

This species commonly roosts in attics and church belfries, and behind shutters and loose boards.  During the winter months, colonies travel short distances seeking hollow trees, rock crevices, drainage pipes, caves, mines and buildings to hibernate alone or in small groups.

Little brown bats:

This species roosts in tree cavities and crevices during the warmer months and seeks shelter in caves and mines to hibernate.

Threats

Bats can pose a serious health threat to humans if they are found inside a structure. Fungi that harbors in bat droppings can cause the lung disease, histoplasmosis. An accumulation of droppings should be professionally decontaminated and removed.

A small percentage of bats are also infected with rabies, but may not show symptoms. Rabies can be transmitted when saliva or even the body tissue of an infected animal comes into contact with another animal or human. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if you’ve had any unprotected, physical contact with a bat.

In addition, if an infestation develops, it is important to treat the area for bat mites and bat bugs, which will bite humans.

Wasps

Pest Image

Wasps

Getting rid of wasps usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Wasps are venomous. They can pose a serious health hazard to anyone with allergies, including swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, and in some cases even death. Wasps can make nests in the eves and ledges of your home, trees, in the ground and even inside your home.

Common Misconception: Some people think using an “off the shelf” product will take care of the problem. But these products only kill the wasps that you directly hit. One nest can hold thousands of wasps.

Short Term Solution:

First, a WARNING!!! Do Not Attempt any of these steps if you are allergic to wasps or if you don’t know if you have a wasp allergy.

  • From a safe distance, locate the wasp nest. Spray the area with a killing product from the store. It will kill some of the wasps instantly.
  • After spraying, wait a day to make sure you have killed the dwellers of the particular nest. It is important to remove the nest if possible.
  • Make sure none of your window screens have holes.
  • Keep all doors, windows and garage doors closed.
  • Install insect screening over your attic vent and exhaust vents

American Pest Long Term Solution:

  • We can determine the size of infestation and pest control needs of your home with a FREE NO COST, NO OBLIGATION 20 Minute PEST AUDIT.
  • With a bad infestation you will have to have maximum treatment. We always look for permanent solutions to the problem at hand. Treatment could include wall void applications, attic treatments, trees and more.
  • For Minor infestations, many times, we can come treat the problem and be out of your home the same day. We will help you make a plan that is right for YOU and YOUR BUDGET. Call us today!

Something You Should Know! Ticks can carry serious diseases! These include Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and something called Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis which attacks the blood.

Common Misconceptions: Even though ticks are often considered a nuisance pest, their affects can last for years and cost a fortune in medical bills.

Short Term Solution:

  • Trim back weeds and tall grass from around your home.
  • Have your pets properly treated – they can bring a number of ticks into the home.
  • Wear light-colored clothes. This makes it easier to spot ticks that may be on you.

Termites

Termites

Getting rid of termites usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Termites do more than $5 Billion dollars in damage to structures each year. That is more than all natural disasters combined. Termites live in nearly every state in the U.S. They are active all year long, 24-7.

Common Misconception: If a house is treated one time, it is good for life. No. Treatments only last about 3 to 5 years.

Short Term Solution:

  • Vacuum. It won’t get rid of all of them, but vacuuming can reduce the group and the damage they are doing. Make sure to dispose of them outside and away from buildings.
  • If you see Termites exiting a wall, do not cover with tape. This can actually push them to a different exit hole.
  • Do NOT spray any area where damage or termites were found.
  • You can actually leave them alone until we arrive. The fact is, the Termites are not going to do much more damage in a few hours or days than they already have done. Letting them be and calling us is our best recommendation. That way we can make a thorough inspection and create the best recommendation.

Treatment could include wall void applications, attic treatments, tree trimming, caulking and more.
  • For minor infestations, many times, we can come treat the problem and be out of your home the same day. However, to keep pests out of your home for good, preventative service may be recommended.

Spiders

Pest Image

Spiders

What kind of spider has a fiddle on its back? I don’t like spiders how do I get rid of them? The spider you are talking about is a Brown Recluse. We can rid your home of the spiders through control and preventative maintenance programs.

Brown recluse spiders are easily recognizable by the violin or fiddle looking mark on the back of the spider. These spiders are reclusive by nature, so they will not be in open areas. More common these spiders will be in closets crawl spaces and in low traveled areas of the home.

The brown recluse is difficult to identify quickly. As its name indicates, it is dark brown to brown or tan. The spider is usually about 3/8 of an inch long and 3/16 of an inch wide, and is about the size of a quarter including its legs. The most striking marking of a mature brown recluse is a dark violin shape behind its head with the neck of the violin pointing toward the abdomen. However, other spiders have similar markings. The abdomen is uniformly colored, and is covered with numerous fine hairs that provide a velvety appearance. The long, thin, brown legs also are covered with fine hairs. Males are slightly smaller in body length but with longer legs. Both sexes are venomous. One of the best ways to identify the brown recluse is its eyes–most spiders have eight, but the brown recluse has only six arranged in pairs in a semicircle on the forepart of the head, or cephalothorax.

The Brown Recluse spiders can be found both indoors and outdoors. They can thrive in man made areas which makes them more of a threat to your family. They may also live in areas outdoors, such as wood piles, storage sheds, large stones used for landscaping and garages.

A common misconception of the brown recluse is that it has a much wider range in the united states than it really does. These spiders are only found in the southwest and lower part of the Midwest. Unfortantely Kansas is included in this area.

Short Term Solution:

  • When storing clothes make sure that you put then in a plastic container that seals tightly.
  • When putting on shoes, or clothing that has not been handled in a while shake before putting on.
  • When making your bed make sure that none of the sheets or blankets are hanging to the ground making easy access to the bed.
  • In areas of low traffic vacuum all spider webs and dispose of immediately.
  • When handling cardboard boxes or other storage items it is a good idea to wear protective gloves.

American Pest Long Term Solution:

  • We can determine the size of the infestation and pest control needs of your home with a FREE NO COST NO OBLIGATION 20 Minute PEST AUDIT Severe infestations need maximum treatment we always look for permanent solutions to the problem at hand. We can treat all areas of the home including crawl spaces and attics.
  • The spider is largely a scavenger, preferring dead insects. Eliminating other insects will naturally help keep the brown recluse under control. The best way to keep Brown Recluse spiders out of your home and away from your family is to sign up for one of our preventative services, to not only control the Brown Recluse but all of your pest concerns.

Scorpions

Pest Image

Scorpions

Getting rid of Scorpions usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Kansas has one type of scorpion called the Bark Scorpion. They like cool and moist areas, so you can often find them under pieces of bark, under rocks, under bricks and even in your house. They usually come out between dusk and midnight.

Common Misconceptions: Many people think scorpions are deadly. There have been a few recorded deaths in the U.S., but mostly scorpions just have a nasty sting – similar to a wasp or bee sting.

Short Term Solution:

  • Clear all debris from around your house – the fewer hiding spots the better.
  • Pick up piles of wood and rocks from around your house.
  • Seal cracks and gaps around your home with silicone.

American Pest Long Term Solution:

  • Call us for a FREE, NO COST, NO OBLIGATION pest audit. It will only take 20 minutes.
  • Once we identify the problem, one of our highly-trained technicians will provide SEVERAL SOLUTIONS that are right for YOU and YOUR BUDGET.

Roachces

Pest Image

Roachces

Getting rid of Roaches usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! For every one roach you see, there are 30 living in your walls. They carry 33 different diseases and infections. One pair of German Cockroaches in perfect conditions could grow to a massive family of more than 100,000 in just 3 months. German Cockroaches rely on you to provide food and water in order for them to survive. In 32 years of business, American pest has terminated more than 69,000,000,000 (billion) roaches.

Common Misconception: ‘Off The Shelf’ products kill all the cockroaches. Products on TV claim that their product will ‘kill on the spot’. This is true, but only true for the ones that you see. The truth is that there are dozens more behind the wall voids nesting and multiplying.

Short Term Solutions

  • Make sure all of your counter tops, cabinets, floors, and window seals are free of any food crumbs and water. (This includes the dog food that FIDO slipped under the oven.) Roaches breed especially fast on high protein diets. Make sure to dry all counter tops and sinks after use.
  • Remove all cardboard, egg containers, and paper sacks from your kitchen. AND do not forget the items stuffed behind the refrigerator, breeding the next generation of roaches.
  • Vacuum your cabinets thoroughly (and throw away the vacuum bag). This will not only remove food from the cabinets, but also the Roach Egg capsules. Each egg capsule can hold up to 30 eggs inside.

American Pest Long Term Solution:

  • We can determine the size of infestation and pest control needs of your home with a FREE NO COST, NO OBLIGATION 20 Minute PEST AUDIT…
  • With a bad infestation you will have to have maximum treatment. We always look for permanent solutions to the problem at hand. Treatment could include wall void applications, attic treatments, tree trimming, exterior treatments, bait applications, or exclusion methods using caulking, expandable foam, steel wool, or door sweeps to seal the pest out.
  • For Minor infestations, many times, we can come treat the problem and be out of your home the same day. However to keep pests out of your home for good, preventative service may be recommended.

Moles

Pest Image

Moles

Getting rid of Moles usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Moles can change your yard from an emerald paradise to a dying patch of grass in a matter of weeks. They can create a series of tunnels looking for their favorite foods, like earthworms. All the while your grass begins to die.

Common Misconception: Moles don’t just work at night. They can work around the clock, taking breaks for naps, which give them plenty of energy to keep on digging!

Short Term Solution:

  • Eliminate their food source. Moles love earthworms, and earthworms love moisture. If you decrease the moisture in your lawn, it will discourage moles.
  • While this short-term solution will help, no one wants their grass to die. Please call us for a FREE pest audit. A highly-trained technician will help you determine the best solution for you and your budget.

American Pest Long Term Solution:

  • We can provide a thorough treatment with a FREE NO COST, NO OBLIGATION PEST AUDIT.

Mice

Pest Image

Mice

Getting rid of mice usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Two Mice have the reproductive capacity to create 2,000 mice by the end of the year. They eat your food and contaminate it with urine and excrement. They gnaw into materials such as paper, books, wood or upholstery which they use as nesting material. They also gnaw on plastic, cinder blocks, soft metals such as lead and aluminum, and wiring which may cause a fire hazard. They, or the parasites they carry, (such as fleas, mites and worms) spread many diseases.

Common Misconception – Treatment for Rodents is only necessary in the winter time, because that is the only time they enter my home. The truth is, rodents reproduce all year long, and proper control measures during the spring, summer, or fall are necessary to limit population sizes that will try to enter your home.

Short Term Solution:

  • Place all dog food, cat food, bird seed, and grass seed sealed tightly in plastic containers. For example, mice smell pet food in your garage, and from there will enter your home.
  • Inspect your home for air conditioner and gas line gaps. Seal these gaps tightly. The fewer the entry points for rodents, the fewer you will have in your home.
  • Remove clutter from your garage, basement, or shed. Rodents do not like to be seen. The more clutter, the more comfortable rodents feel.

Treatment could include wall void applications, attic treatments, exterior treatments, bait applications, or exclusion methods using caulking, expandable foam, steel wool, or door sweeps to seal the pest out.

Flies

Pest Image

Flies

Getting rid of Flies usually requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Many types of flies exist in our area. These include House Flies, Blow Flies, Cluster Flies, Drain Flies and more.

Common Misconception: Once it gets cold, flies will disappear. Nope. If flies are living within your home or building, they can survive inside and continue to be a problem all year.

Short Term Solution:

  • Clean, clean, clean. Flies feed off dirty areas. The cleaner your surroundings, the less likely flies will live there.
  • Check for open windows and torn screens. Make sure flies don’t have a way inside.
  • Capture one of the flies to identify them. This will help us all diagnose the source of the problem.

American Pest Long Lasting Solution:

  • We can determine the size of infestation and pest control needs of your home with a FREE NO COST, NO OBLIGATION 20 Minute PEST AUDIT.
  • With a bad infestation you will have to have maximum treatment. We always look for permanent solutions to the problem at hand. Treatment could include wall void applications, attic treatments, tree trimming, caulking and more.

Fleas

Pest Image

Fleas

Getting rid of Fleas requires professional attention. Although sprays and home treatments may provide temporary relief, we highly recommend you call American Pest as soon as possible so we can permanently get rid of the pests.

Something You Should Know! Fleas can multiply faster than you can say “scratch”. Just one female can lay up to 50 eggs per day, and she with her offspring will soon produce more than 44,000 eggs per day.

Common Misconception: Some people think using an “off the shelf” product will take care of the problem. Even though these products claim to “kill and repel” on contact, it usually doesn’t work for all of the pests, because fleas in the cocoon stage are immune to most products. Soon these fleas will emerge and start to infest your home again.

Short Term Solution:

  • Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum! Vacuuming carpets, bedding, and pet bedding helps reduce the flea population.
  • Take your pet to the vet for flea treatment.
  • Try to get your pet and your house treated on the same day. This will make flea treatments most effective.

Beetles

Many people who contact us know they need a service to rid their home of the pest. They also want to find a way to contain the infestation before it spreads deeper or throughout their home. Short term solutions will work until we can get to your location and do our work.

Common Misconception: You can tell the age of a lady bug by counting the number of spots on its wings. Once a lady beetle reaches adulthood and has wings, It is no longer growing and molting. Its colors and spots remain the same throughout Its adult life; they are not indicators of age. Many lady beetle species are named for their markings, however. The seven-spotted lady beetle, for example, has seven black spots on its red back.

  • Seal all cracks around doors, windows, siding, and utility pipes with silicone caulk.
  • Make sure there are no tears in your window screens.
